25 October Not our finest hour

To walk, or not to walk, that is.... Walking achieves our objective of getting into Cornwall – Hartland Quay to Morwenstow.  However, the forecast, though better is still iffy.  In the end, we decide that the combination of strong winds, slippery surfaces, a path which follows the cliff edge followed by driving back in the dark is just too much.

We check out and hit the road for home. £149.60 b & b dinner.(£90.00 deposit already paid).

Was this our finest hour?  Probably not.  Did we enjoy the weekend?  Absolutely.

  As we check out, sewage is appearing in our toilet.   We do feel we are leaving a sinking ship. We are encouraged by the thought that we are now liberated from the A303 and its bottlenecks.   Instead we take A35/A31 to the M27, expecting to do it in a much shorter time.   This proves not to be.   The traffic is very slow and it ends up taking just as long as driving from West Hill.   We are home for a late lunch.  We have lots going on in May and June, so our next SWCP session will be July or August.  Poole? 14th July Poole to Hampton Hill

 We make the most of our room at The Sandbanks Hotel.  It has a balcony overlooking Poole Harbour and a bathroom with an actual bath and a heated towel rail which actually works. I have a 'full Dorset' breakfast which makes a welcome change from the Durdle Door continental breakfasts. We stop for petrol and coffee at Winchester. It is raining.

  Drove to Shaldon. Parked at Ness Hotel. It’s a brilliant hotel.   Great room with proper bathroom and bath.                                                                               The Ness House  Then we walked down to the beach and caught the ferry to Teignmouth - £2.00 cash pp. We watched Michael Portillo doing this as part of his series walking the SWCP.   A guy we met last night was on the ferry.   He had walked from Torquay the previous day carrying a huge pack.   He had a Freedom pass, so not young.                                                       Sha...
